The page contains 8 pictures from Guilin and the Li River Cruise. Guilin is known for it very unusual mountain formations as pictured below. There are only two other places in the Earth with similar features. In addition, Guilin is known for its unusual fishing technique. They have trained Cormorant birds to fish for them. A rope is tied around the birds neck so that the bird cannot swallow fish. At night the fisherman will be on a bamboo raft with two lanterns at the front. The lanterns will attract fish. The birds will dive for the fish and try to eat them. Since the rope prevents them from swallowing the fish, the fisherman pulls the bird back on the raft and takes the fish away from it. The birds than dive for more fish.

We saw an exhibition of this at night in Guilin. Later on the Li River Cruise, we saw several cormorant birds and rafts along the shore, awaiting night and the next fishing trip.

Ron & Sheila on the Li River Cruise, with the silhouette of the mountains in the background. You can see one of the other cruise boats in front of them. There was a flotilla of around 20 boats which went on the Cruise. We were on the top deck of the boat. Guilin is very hazy as you can tell.

With so many people in China using bicycles for their main transportation, it is no surprise that there are numerous bicycle repair stations along their routes. This was a typical repair station. Water bowl for detecting leaks, pumps, and basic tools. The mechanic was sleeping on the job. He is in the upper right corner on a bench sleeping.

Ron & Sheila took a taxi from downtown Guilin to see some caves just 5 miles outside of the city. We decided to walk back and see the country side. This was Ron walking back, along a lake.

On the walk back to town (Guilin), they ran across a real character. This farmer was nice enough to pose for a picture. After he posed, he demonstrated his knowledge of capitalism. Yes, he held his hand out for money. We naively thought he wanted to shake an American's hand. It cost us about 8 RMB ($1.00 US ).

Taxi cabs in China come in numerous sizes and shapes. Here was a motor cycle taxi with room in the back for 1-2 people.

Along the Li River cruise were some locals on their Bamboo raft.
